The 200-acre Otter
Lake Facility was designed to accept all solid waste generated by
the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) that is not diverted to
either of HRM’s two composting facilities or materials recovery
facility. The goal of this facility is to ensure that the only material
entering the landfill is stable, inert or residual in nature.

Three key buildings
were constructed for the solid waste management process, the Front
End Processing Facility, the Waste Stabilization Facility with
Biofilter and the Residual Disposal Facility. Construction occurred
over one year and the facility is designed to operate for 25 years.
